Textures are still unfiltered, polygons are still chunky, but it all feels fresh again. The new blood and gore system helps, too - enemies gib satisfyingly, and the previously useless-feeling axe now slices clean through enemies like something out of a samurai anime. They also sound beefier, and the accompanying lighting and particle effects really make things feel powerful. Weapons are still chunky enough to look a little old-school, but far more detailed and better animated. Part of Quake 1.5's stated goal is to make the game feel more like the current crop of retro revival shooters, and I feel that it hits the mark. Find it on Mod DB, or check out a trailer below if the fancy new boss above isn't exciting enough.
Today's release is technically a beta, but well worth playing, and dead easy to set up too. That means new, detailed weapon models, monsters (some from the excellent Arcane Dimensions), levels and more. Assembled by modder "bloodshot12" (although its full credits are extensive), it's a cocktail of mods for Id's original Quake that aims to retain its aesthetic, but upgrade everything else. Also let us know how much ram you've got.A raytraced Quake 2 might be a fun retro showcase of shiny new hardware, but Quake 1.5 is what you really want to be playing right now. If that fails, copy and paste the contents of q4config.cfg in your next post and we'll try and do it manually. Open q4config.cfg in a text editor like note pad, then look for the line "image_downsize" (without the quotes), it'll probably set for "1" and you'll probably want to change it to "0". If everything is OK, feel free to delete the file you just moved. If there's problems starting the game or getting into the gameplay alittle, just move the file back where your found it. This cause Q4 to rewrite the file, resetting all audio and video settings as well as your keyboard bindings the next time Quake 4 is run Move the file temporarily someplace like your desktop. It should be someplace like C:\Program Files\idsoftware\Quake4\q4base\q4config.cfg. The easiest way to do it will be to cut and paste (move) q4config.cfg from your Quake 4 install directory.
I haven't heard of Q4 problems with nVidia video cards.
I don't have Quake installed right now, this is by memory and the directory structure may be a little off. I haven't always gotten consistent results from nVidia's game profile settings.
